How Cognitive Processing Therapy Works

After a traumatic event, it is natural to try to make sense of what happened. Sometimes, the conclusions we draw, such as "It was my fault," "The world is completely dangerous," or "I can never trust anyone," become stuck points that perpetuate PTSD symptoms.

CPT is a 12-session structured therapy that helps you examine these stuck points and develop more balanced, accurate beliefs. It does not require you to describe the trauma in extensive detail, making it a good option for veterans who are hesitant about exposure-based therapies.

What to Expect in CPT

1

Learn about PTSD

Understand how PTSD develops and the connection between thoughts and feelings.

Write your impact statement

2

Socratic questioning

Challenging beliefs worksheets

Examine stuck points from multiple angles using structured worksheets.

Practice between sessions

3

Five theme areas

Revised impact statement
