How EMDR Works
EMDR is based on the idea that traumatic memories get "stuck" in the brain in their original, distressing form. When triggered, these memories replay with the same fear, helplessness, and physical sensations as the original event.
During EMDR, your provider guides you through sets of bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements) while you briefly focus on the traumatic memory. This process allows your brain to reprocess the memory, reducing its emotional charge and integrating it into your broader life experience.
What to Expect in EMDR
Trauma mapping
Identify the memories, triggers, and beliefs to target in treatment.
Resource building
Learn self-regulation techniques to manage distress during processing.
Set expectations

Bilateral stimulation
Follow guided eye movements while briefly holding the traumatic memory in mind.
Let your brain work
Your brain's natural healing process takes over during reprocessing.
Install positive beliefs
Replace negative self-beliefs with positive ones as the memory loses its charge.
